The Cape Town Symphony Choir will be performing Mozart’s Requiem in one of the oldest church buildings in South Africa, the Lutheran Church in Strand Street.
Don’t miss the chance to hear this famous, emotionally stirring choral work, which Mozart believed he was writing for his own death. The composer did in fact die, at the age of 35, while writing the Requiem, which was finally completed by one of his students.
In 1774, Martin Melck, himself a Lutheran, built and donated the church to the early Lutheran congregation of Cape Town. It would undergo various alterations and additions, which include the front elevation and exquisite carvings on organ façade and pulpit by the Cape’s leading sculptor at the time, Anton Anreith. Of significance is that the inauguration of the church in Cape Town and first performances of Mozart’s Requiem in Europe happened concurrently.
The SCCT will perform Mozart’s Requiem on Saturday, 2 March, at 7.30pm, under the baton of well-known musical director Alex Fokkens.
