CURRENT NEWS

It is hard to believe that it is almost exactly one year since our last concert, Mozart’s Requiem which we sang at the Lutheran Church on 29th February 2020. Nobody had any idea at that point that we were heading into a worldwide pandemic, lockdowns and restrictions and enormous challenges on many levels.

We at the Symphony Choir worked very hard to keep some sort of musical connection going for our choir members and although we couldn’t sing together, we met virtually using Facebook and Zoom for many months and, for the last couple of months of the year, were able to move to a blended format with a small number of people attending in person, (socially distanced, masked and following all Covid protocols) and the remaining members joining the session via Zoom

Singing with masks on, socially distanced from fellow choir members took a little getting used to but the joy of being able to sing together made the discomfort worthwhile and lifted everyones spirits.

We were planning an informal, outdoor singing gathering for a larger group at the end of the year but a combination of unpredictable Cape Town weather plus the looming Corona second wave meant that we had to shelve those plans.

2021 has started with very little clarity in terms of what may be possible in the way of music performances this year but we are determined to keep singing. Our Choir members, with weekly online guidance from Alex Fokkens, have started working individually on learning Faure’s Requiem and we are hoping that once the current restrictions are eased, we will be able to rehearse safely together outdoors. Our goal is to perform the Requiem in a few months time whether it be to a live audience or recorded and streamed, depending on the Covid situation at the time.

As soon as we have any definite plans in place for 2021, we will update the information here on our website and on Facebook and will send out an email to our database.
